[NEW] Trailer: Knights of Badassdom (2011)

July 26, 2011

Certain to be the nerdiest, most enjoyable horror film that you will find out there, Knights of Badassdom will bring out the nerd in all of us.

For those unfamiliar with the fantasy action role-play game, L.A.R.P was introduced to much of the world in the 2008 comedy Role Models. It is essentially a live action Dungeons and Dragons where nerds get to battle it out in costumes rather than sitting around a table. It’s much more hilarious than it sounds, if you don’t believe me, you’ll have to watch Role Models, pronto.

In Knights of Badassdom, a group of friends join together to take part in a LARPing battle (don’t hesistate to correct me if I misuse the term), and in a desperate attempt to gain the upper hand in battle, they accidentally summon a demon from the underworld. The horror comedy film will star many familiar faces including Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), the beautiful Summer Glau (Serenity), Community favourite Danny Pudi and of course, the great Peter Dinklage who many will recognize as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Knights of Badassdom: Peter Dinklage (Left) and Ryan Kwanten (Right)

This film is essentially a nerd’s version of Braveheart with badass fake armour and foam swords. There is actually a real LARPing community which I didn’t know existed but director Joe Lynch wanted to make sure this film accurately represented the LARPers of the world. He said this past weekend in an interview at Comic-Con that “if one person grabs a foam sword at the end of the movie, we’ve done our jobs.” I think it’s a very attainable goal considering how much fun these guys make it look but let me assure all of you…that it will not likely be me who picks up that foam Claymore.

But you never know, maybe Knights of Badassdom will change my mind! It is set to be released late 2011, so aspiring LARPers of the world, you have a few months to get your armour, shields and swords ready for the screening. Hizzah!

[NEW] Trailer: Drive (2011)

July 25, 2011

Ryan Gosling known for his versatile acting abilities will play an LA stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver in his upcoming action film, Drive.

Coming off one of his finest performances in last year’s Oscar nominated film, Blue Valentine, Ryan Gosling follows suit with yet another film worthy of public and critical praise. Drive was among the films nominated for the Palme d’Or, the Cannes Film Festival’s top award while Danish director, Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson) took home the award for Best Director.

Ryan Gosling in Drive

I’m certain that Drive will be hugely successful in the box office this year given the exceptional talents that the film hosts and the thrilling debut trailer we’ve just seen. The trailer premiered at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and will surely pick up momentum from here on out. The film stars Ryan Gosling as the LA stunt driver who takes his talents to become a getaway driver on the side. He will also be supported by award winning talents like Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad).

Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan are probably among my favourite actors out there right now and so I am thrilled to see how good this film looks. Drive is set to kick off our Fall film season on September 16th, 2011 but hopefully it’ll be among the films featured at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival so I can catch it early!

What’re your thoughts on Drive? Are you excited or is it just me? – Haha

[NEW] Teaser Trailer: The Amazing Spider-man

July 20, 2011

Our first teaser from Marc Webb’s upcoming reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man!

We finally have our first glimpse of what the Spider-man reboot will look like! The 500 Days of Summer director has decided to go with yet another origin story, so we can again expect the spiderbite and Peter Parker’s discovery of his newly acquired abilities. It’ll definitely be a little disappointing to some considering the fresh take that Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) went with his own comic book reboot, X-Men: First Class, however I’m sure the hype around this movie will blow up with more details and trailers released. It’ll certainly be a nice addition to my movie collection, that’s for sure!

The Amazing Spider-Man: Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) in new Spidey Suit

The Amazing Spider-Man will star one of my all time favourite talents, Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) who will be playing young Peter Parker and will vie for the attention of Gwen Stacy played by a blonde Emma Stone (Zombieland). The film will also feature appearances by Rhys Ifans (The Boat that Rocked) who will play Dr. Curt Connors as well as Denis Leary (Rescue Me).

The Amazing Spider-Man is set to come out July 3rd, 2012. Will this reboot be good enough to revive the series or will we be asking for another reboot?

[NEW] Trailer – Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

July 12, 2011

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law team up again as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s much anticipated sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows!

July is my favourite time of year! The weather is sunny and hot, we’re all awaiting the next summer blockbuster to release and…we get our first glimpse at our Christmas blockbusters! Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is likely to be one of the first trailers we should expect this month and I am thrilled!!

Guy Ritchie known for his sharp, smart and witty British films such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, he once expressed that he always wanted to direct a period piece, and in 2009, he brought us his exceptional take on Sherlock Holmes. If you have not had the chance to watch it, I would very highly recommend it! Robert Downey Jr. is at his very best, on par with his performance as Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder. Today, we finally get our first glimpse of our long awaited sequel and I think it looks great! Not all sequels are doomed for failure!

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson will have it out with who will ultimately be their arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty played by Jared Harris; many may recognize him as Lane Pryce from Mad Men. On paper, Moriarty is essentially an evil version of the witty and brilliant detective so it will surely be an entertaining and very evenly matched chess game between the two rivals. The femme fatale in Ritchie’s sequel will be none other than Noomi Rapace, renowned for her portrayal of the lead character, Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Saga.

Left to Right: Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes), Noomi Rapace (Sim), Jude Law (Dr. Watson) in the anticipated sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

As you might tell, I am SO excited for this to come out and even more thrilled that it looks as great as the first! What do you think of the trailer? First impressions?

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is set for release December 16th, 2011! Everyone mark your calendars!

[NEW] Trailer: Immortals

June 29, 2011

Don’t be confused, you are not watching the trailer for 300..but behold, your new Superman in action in the upcoming fantasy-action film, Immortals!

What may appear like a sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2006 stylish epic, 300, is actually yet another highly stylized fantasy-action epic titled Immortals (not to be mistaken with the army known as the Immortals in the film 300 haha). The story of Immortals is loosely based on the mythological story of “Theseus and the Minotaur and the Titanomachy,” I’m not too caught up on my Greek mythology so you might have to wiki them for yourselves. However, what I can tell you is that the film is about a Titan named Hyperion who declares war against humanity and since the gods cannot take sides on a war, Zeus appoints and guides a peasant named Theseus to protect his homeland and the human race.

Immortals vs. 300

To be perfectly honest, I thought for the longest time that this was either a sequel to 300 or a spin-off film about the Immortal army but boy was I wrong! Similar to Zack Snyder’s cinematic style, Indian director, Tarsem Singh (The Cell) uses a similar technique of integrating real-time, slow-motion and camera pans to create an intensity in an action sequence a normal shot can’t quite capture. The accentuation of colours among a grey filtered background is also used in Immortals just as Snyder did with 300 which is a unique and fitting scheme for these kinds of fantasy epics. As long as we see strong writing in the film, I think Immortals will make up for the last mythological folly, Clash of the Titans in 2010.

Immortals boasts an exceptional cast led by Henry Cavill (The Tudors) who plays the hero Theseus, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire fame and the legendary John Hurt (Alien). As of right now, Immortals is among the top of my “To-Watch” list for the Fall, I hope it pulls it off because it would really bring a buzz around Henry Cavill and his upcoming role as Superman! Fingers crossed my friends!

Immortals is set to be released on November 11th, 2011 (11.11.11)

What do you guys think? Did you think it was another 300 too?

[NEW] Trailer: Moneyball

June 16, 2011

Brad Pitt. Jonah Hill. Serious Sports Film. Ever expect yourself to read those words together?

I definitely never expected to see a cast like this for a film like this but Moneyball looks like its..well..only seems appropriate to describe it as a potential homerun. The film is an adaptation of the book, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game published in 2003 by Michael M. Lewis. The premise is about the Oakland Athletic’s general manager, Billy Beane and how he fundamentally shifted the way a team scouts and drafts their players and aimed to build a competitive team with his system.

Sure, my description of the premise sounds awfully boring and lame but take 2:31 of your time to watch the trailer and it will show you the wit and the heart that this film has and just how good this film can be, whether or not you know the history of these events or even a baseball fan. The screenplay for Moneyball was written by Academy Award winning screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, most recently known for his contribution to The Social Network.

The film will be carried by talents with the likes of Brad Pitt (Fight Club), Jonah Hill (Superbad) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote). With talents like these backed by the screenwriting of Aaron Sorkin, you have to admit, this film will look to surprise you, just as it did me when I watched the trailer…the first time.

Moneyball is set to be released on September 23rd of this year. What do you think? Will you watch?

[NEW] Trailer: Hangover 2

April 1, 2011

Same Gang, Same Premise, Same EPIC Adventure but this time, with facial tattoos!

The new trailer for Hangover 2 was just released! Stu played by Ed Helms (The Office) is the one getting married this time to his Thai fiancee played by Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch) and when he goes on his bachelor party with the Wolfpack he agrees to take her brother with him to the party. Sound familiar? Yes, but hell, the formula worked the first time around so I’m certain this one is going to be just as rowdy.

I’m already counting down the days until May 26th! Will you be watching?

[NEW] Trailer: Cars 2

November 23, 2010

What’s happened to the Cars franchise?? What’s happened to Pixar’s standards??

Pixar has such a great track record for amazingly innovative and enjoyable films that are loved by movie goers of all ages. Some of their films include: Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, WALL-E and UP! All of them are amazing! But this sequel to the first Cars in 2006 looks weeaaaak.

I would be perfectly happy with just watching a storyline about the “World Grand Prix” but they have to include the line, “they racing to save the world!” It’s a little lame and out of character of them. The sequel looks to have international spies and criminals who are planning on taking down the world.

The reason why animated films are so great because they are able to really stretch the imagination and create an original movie going experience, no one wants to see animated cars save the world, we want to see the adventures they are able to have BECAUSE they’re cars.

I’m pretty skeptical about this one Pixar…I might even say this looks like your worst one yet. Cars 2 will be released in the Summer of 2011.

What do you guys think?

[NEW] Trailer: Green Lantern (2011)

November 17, 2010

It’s here! It’s here!!

Earlier this evening, the first trailer for the upcoming DC superhero film, Green Lantern was released in all of it’s green shaded, intergalactic glory!! I for one was never a very big Green Lantern fan but hell, who can resist going out to watch this film after catching a glimpse at this Summer blockbuster?

In this film, the hero, Hal Jordan played by Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder), is an arrogant fighter jet test pilot who comes across a crashing spaceship which ultimately grants him the ability to wield a power ring. Hal then learns of his newly inherited abilities and responsibilities that come with the Green Lantern Corp power ring and will learn to use it to defend the universe. The film also stars the talents of Mark Strong (Kick-Ass), Peter Sarsgaard (An Education) and Blake Lively (The Town).

Green Lantern is set to be released sometime in the Summer of 2011 and looks to be another great addition to the DC comic book movie resume.

What are your first impressions of the film??? I personally am very happy with the way this has developed and carries a great cast to play the heroes and villians of the Green Lantern Universe.
