As I sat in my theatre seat eagerly awaiting the film to start, I couldn’t help but wonder how Chris Nolan could like many have said, could possibly top The Dark Knight with his new film. It is as if he knows exactly what is needed to consume the audiences and simply blow their minds. Inception has no shortage of these moments.
Easily one of the most anticipated films of the year, Nolan takes filmgoers on a surreal rollercoaster ride with enough complexities to push our minds to create an incredible thought provoking film going experience. The premise of subconscious and malleable realities are in no means original, these intriguing elements can be found in films like Vanilla Sky, Dark City and of course, The Matrix. It is however, the style in which these elements are presented that puts Inception in a league of its own.
In my opinion, Inception is a film where you must go experience it in IMAX or bust. The visual effects are just so astonishing that some sequences will leave you in awe with your mouths open (it most certainly happened to me upon my first…of likely multiple screenings). Regardless of how surreal the dreams sequences may impossibility of the concept of multiple people sharing a dream space and access other people’s minds. The performances by the entire ensemble cast are very strong throughout. The Ocean’s Eleven of subconscious data thieves consist of Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer), Tom Hardy (RocknRolla) and Canadian, Ellen Page (Juno). They’re performances enable the audiences to stay captivated by the premise as a result of inspiring performances lead by the ultra talented and diverse, Leonardo DiCaprio.
Christopher Nolan wrote, produced as well as directed this masterpiece, adding to an already critically acclaimed list of films such as Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight. He is truly a visionary in the industry and can do no wrong when granted the unlimited freedom with his films.
As crazy as it may sound, but Inception is his greatest piece of work yet. It is a film that all MUST experience, so if you have yet to watch it, be sure to. It will be a very serious contender for Best Picture, if not the frontrunner when the time comes. Quote ME!
